AWTR Show #897: Beyond Sacrifice

How much is too much? Soldiers often come home from a deployment and want to go back. They give so much of themselves to a country and may not know when to say “I’ve given enough”. This is a major theme in the book Beyond Sacrifice.

Don’t you love the imperfect hero – the character where you can see bits of yourself in them? Alicia Dill enjoys writing characters that are both protagonists and antagonist. Because in reality – we are all a bit of both.

Originally from Missouri, author Alicia Dill joined the Iowa Army National Guard at the age of 17 and received a degree in journalism and international studies at the University of Iowa, and has a masters from the University of Dubuque. Her first book, Squared Away, was a 2020 International Next Generation Indie Book Award winner and a finalist for the National Indie Excellence Award. Beyond Sacrifice was recently announced as a Finalist for the 2021 CLUE Book Awards for Suspense/Thrillers.

News 6 with Jolene

Here is this week’s News 6 mashup of stories for the week of May 9, 2022, straight from AWN News 6 Correspondent, Jolene McNutt:

Holistic Teams Serve DoD Beneficiaries with Lost Limbs

“There are more than 30,000 Department of Defense beneficiaries with some level of limb loss or dysfunction,” shared Health.mil. This includes combat veterans but also those who have lost limbs in other ways, including car accidents. The goal of the holistic teams is to look at each individual patient and help him or her live a full life, not just focus on the injury.

Free Military Spouse Virtual Symposium

May is a month to celebrate military spouses and the Department of Defense is encouraging participation in their free Virtual Military Spouse Symposium that runs from May 10 through the 12. The symposium main focus this year is the “whole spouse” and “how spouses can take the best care of themselves and ensure family well-being.” Check out the full schedule and register at MySECO.

Blue Star Families Celebrates Military Spouses

Blue Star Families is also celebrating Military Spouse Appreciation Month with events throughout May! This week you can join in to a live chat about career growth in tech and they are giving away one scholarship to VSchool so that a lucky milspouse can become a web designer. Empowerment Patrol Report With Amanda B.

Today we are showcasing our Platoon Member of the Month, Harley Zollers, who was nominated for being so positive and empowering to us here at Army Wife Network and to fellow milspouses on our social media. Here is a little bit about Harley:

I’m originally from a small town in central North Carolina but have spent the last 10 years hopping around due to the military with my parents. I’m thankful to have gotten the opportunity to see more of the US and parts of Japan during these last few years and hope to continue traveling with my fiancé Kevin, wherever the Army decides to send us. We have been long distance since the start of our relationship in 2021, but I can’t wait to be married and start this crazy journey of military life together after this deployment.

I’m 23 and currently studying for a Bachelors in History with the intention of specializing in Genealogy. I love to do photography, and cook and bake in my free time. Once we get settled into our home, I hope to be able to volunteer more and help to encourage others within this community wherever I can.

Thank you so much, Harley, for doing your part to empower military families around the globe.
