AWTR Show #917: People Management in the Space Force

Have you moved somewhere new and can’t find a job? You fill out hundreds of job applications before getting a job offer. This happened to Chris Parrett, who is now working in people management with the Space Force. She filled out 123 job applications with a Master’s Degree and middle management experience before getting a job offer.

Many spouses have amazing skill sets that get fragmented and interrupted over the course of their service member’s career. There aren’t good conditions to support them in a career while supporting their service members, but Space Force is working on this. Spouses and family members are talented, extremely resilient, already understand the military way of life, and they deserve to have that path open to them, should they want to have a career.

Don’t forget to make your resume searchable on USAJobs. And make sure that your resume stands out by telling what your contributions are on the first page. Don’t regurgitate the duties, but instead show the impact or results of your job. And don’t make it look like all words on a page.

It isn’t just a TV show, the newest (and smallest) military department, the Space Force, is here to be anything but traditional.  That is evident in the approach to people management that has been laid out in their first Human Capital Strategy, the Guardian Ideal.  A succinct and bold promise to the workforce. Our guest, Christina Parrett, will give us a look into all things people management looks like with the Space Force.

Chris Parrett is The Director of Civilian Policy and Programs for the United States Space Force, located at the Pentagon in Arlington, VA. In this role she is responsible for the policy and programs related to civilian Guardians for the Space Force. She currently lives in Fairfax Station, VA with her husband and two sons.

Listeners, if you would like to learn more about the Space Force, check out their website here or connect with them on social media via Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. And if you would like to connect with Chris personally, you can connect with her on LinkedIn, Facebook, or Instagram. Also, check out the video clip of General Raymond on Good Morning America talking about the Space Force and how often you use space before your first cup of coffee.

Resource Recon with Sharita and Amanda B.

In this week’s Resource Recon, we are highlighting our Social Media Scoop.

Listeners, if you haven’t checked out our Reels on Instagram yet, we’ve got some REEL good ones! One of our most recent ones, from our very own Content Curator, Chrissy Gibbs, shows what it’s like to be a milspouse woken up at the early hours when her service member is searching for their PT belt. This has happened to me so many times I can’t even count. And, to make it worse, my service member is like this with even more than just a PT belt. It’s even been he is searching for his own phone right on the nightstand. Sharita, have you encountered this situation with your service member?
