A Poetic Tribute: Dear Military Spouse

Dedicated to all current, former, and future military spouses. We appreciate you. Hang in there; you can do this.

Dear military spouse,
I see you standing there,
Know this little tribute,
Is just something to say, “We care!”

It’s no secret you’ve been called,
To quite the daunting goal,
To love and support your service member,
No matter the effort or toll.

The light nights and early mornings,
The coming and the going,
The tears, the hugs, the laughter,
The prayers and just not knowing.

Learning how to parent solo,
Maintaining the peace in the household six,
Moving, teaching, loving, living,
Unclogging the sink which again needs fixed.

Getting creative with your menus,
When finances are stretched too tight,
As your Beloved straps on their boots,
And steps out the door to fight.

Unpacking boxes, painting walls,
Making friends in record time,
Only to say goodbye again soon,
When orders come down the line.

Trying to sneak in quality time,
With the person you love so much,
Often seems impossible,
With military schedules and such.

Carpools, appointments,
Fitness, volunteering, and don’t forget sleep,
Some days pass in a hazy blur,
While others slowly creep.

Balancing all of these things,
Keeping so many plates up in the air,
You can’t help but think to yourself sometimes,
This experience just isn’t fair.

But my dear milspouse,
Be encouraged as you go with the flow,
Because you, of all people,
Are so much stronger than you know.

It’s hard to keep on going,
When in your heart you feel so lacking,
But milspouse, the kids are alive and the house isn’t on fire,
So as far as I’m concerned, you’re tracking!

Yes, this call is often hard,
When peace seems like a mere mirage,
But if you need an outlet to vent
You can borrow the punching bag in my garage.

Believe it or not,
What they say is true,
You are the backbone of the military,
Yes, my friend, I mean you!

Stay true to the course,
Hang in there, because you should know,
When these stormy clouds finally break apart,
A rainbow lies below.

Being married to the military,
Some days feels hard just to survive,
But dear friend, I believe in you,
Press on and you will thrive.

So be encouraged, don’t give up,
More strength in you can be discovered,
But in the meantime, while you search,
I recommend something chocolate covered.

She is currently in pursuit of her EdD in Educational Counseling with an emphasis in Pastoral Counseling, also from Liberty University. Sharita is not only an Army Wife, but is also a Tiny Human mama of two kiddos, a 6-year-old girl and a 2.5-year old boy. She is also a smallish-dog-owner, aspiring-runner, writer, speaker, and spiritual leadership coach. The Knobloch family believes that it is a great privilege to watch God work as they minister in their Army community, regardless of zip code or time zone. She has been serving with AWN in some capacity since February 2014 when she published her first blog for AWN, and has recently transitioned into the role of AWN Owner & Commander. Sharita gets way too excited about office supplies and journal shopping. She is a certified auctioneer, wore duct tape to senior prom (for a scholarship contest #DontJudge), loves napping, fitness, reading for fun, and cheering others on as they strive to reach their goals. Sharita overuses #Hashtags on a regular basis with #NoShame and frequently uses #America! as a verb.
