To the Parent of “That” Child

To the parent of the child that screamed during the entire 20-minute line at the commissary, who I could also tell is was the verge of tears and insanity: I have been there.

To the dad of that child that had the explosive diaper during the FRG meeting: do not worry, it can happen to any of us.

To the mom of the child that managed to not get along with any of other children at the play date you finally managed to organize: you are not the first mom that has suffered through this.

To the parent of that child that just cried the majority of the unit “fun day” and screamed relentlessly whenever you tried to have a conversation with another adult: it is okay, and it will get better.

To the mom of the breastfed baby that has decided that Mommy is more of a pacifier than a bottle on the one day that you have to leave the house: I have been there, and I feel your frustration.

To the mom of the child who is very angry that Daddy is gone once again, and the only way that they know to express it is to demonstrate the Level 5 tantrum they have perfected during any and every social event: my heart goes out to you, and I hope that you know that you are not alone.

I do not offer advice or suggestions, but I do offer understanding.

Being a military spouse is not always easy. Our support systems are not always near, and we often have to do it alone for long stretches of time.

We learn to be mom and dad, sometimes, and often worry about how well we are doing at that balancing act.

We manage under circumstances that most outside of the military world could not even fathom.

Stay strong and resilient, my friend, and know that you’ve got this. You can make it through the rough days, and the good ones are around the corner.

For all the other spouses watching and listening to this poor soul, remember the days that you experienced similar ones. I ask that instead of dirty looks or disapproving body language, offer a comforting smile and some help.

We are all in this together. We can be a great substitute support system and an even better friend when it is needed.

Army Wife Network is blessed with many military spouses who share their journey through writing in our Experience blog category. As we PCS in our military journey, bloggers too sometimes move on. Their content and contributions are still valued and resourceful. Those posts are reassigned under "Retired Bloggers" in order to allow them to remain available as content for our AWN fans.
