HIIT It with the Right Intensity

HIIT has been shown in various studies to be more efficient at caloric burn in the fat-torching department than steady-state cardio, both during and after your workout. Everyone wants to get the most bang for their buck, so why not go to as many HIIT classes as possible?

Well, this is where we need to make sure we fully understand that not all HIIT classes are the same, specifically on the caloric burn level. This is where I’m happy to step in and shed some light on these HIIT-style workouts.

5 Ground Rules for Strength Training

If you are just starting your weight-lifting journey, it can be a daunting task. With the advent of social media, there are so many Instagram fitness people showing off their heaviest or most complicated lifts. These videos, while impressive to an experienced strength trainer or lifter, can leave fitness professionals leery, as complicated lifting can shy newbies away from fitness (which is not a good thing). I’m here to give novice lifters a few tips, or rather, ground rules, on how to approach strength training.

Debunking 6 Common Strength Training Myths

I am a big champion for exercise—cardio or strength, it all is necessary to prevent disease, maintain sanity/self-care, and improve quality of life. When it comes to strength training, however, there are some myths that prevent people from picking up a dumbbell. There are countless myths around resistance training that stem from its origin—bodybuilders who started training people in the gyms they worked out in early in the 20th century, when fitness clubs were opened to the masses. These men (not many women back then) only knew how to do what they knew, which is lift heavy and lift all day.

Understanding Stress and What to Do About It

I have been trying to write a highly researched blog pertaining to debunking myths around resistance training but have been struggling to stay focused. Maybe it’s stress.

The past month (well, few months, actually) has been very hectic in the Bearden household. We planned and moved from Tacoma, Washington, to Colorado Springs, Colorado, for my new job! While we knew a move to The Springs was inevitable, my new job on Fort Carson made us push our moving plans up about three months. Re-wiring Those Resolutions

Of all New Year’s resolutions, the most popular is exercising to get in shape (19.7%) followed by eating better to lose weight (18.3%). Unfortunately, only 11.3% turn these goals into long-term lifestyle changes, which is a little bleak, right? I did not want to write about New Year’s resolutions in December, because we can all use a little inspiration to keep going in the middle of an already chaotic January. 2021 can still be the advent of those long-term lifestyle goals with a few SMART tweaks.

5 Tips for Making Home Exercise Work

This is a crazy time, right?

We are in a situation where our homes are more multifunctional than ever—school, office, home, and gym.

This has been a topic of conversation for a lot of people, and Instagram has blown up with hashtags featuring some unique perspectives on exercise at home, even yoga poses with a wine glass in hand.  While some have found the silver lining of this pandemic (e.g. more hours to workout, more time in nature and with family, or more mindfulness), others have found the stress of homes crowded with kids or fur babies to be a blessing.

Why Covetousness is Awesome

“Do not covet” is just dumb, my loves. It’s like saying “Thou Shalt Not Breathe” or “Thou Shalt Not Pump Blood From Thy Heart.” Of course we are going to covet. It’s an emotion that will run through each one of us, relatively often. The issue, of course, isn’t to somehow magic that emotion out of us. This issue, my loves, is how to use it as a superpower.

Let me explain.
