AWTR Show #923: Going Beyond, “Thank you for your service”

Thank you should be seen as an icebreaker and not an ending. Going beyond, “Thank you for your service” can be easy and creates a more meaningful conversation. Some good follow-up questions are: what branch did you serve in or what was your job? These questions will help to form a deeper more authentic connection with the person you want to thank.

And for those awkward social situations – remember don’t PRY. Stay away from Politics. Don’t force a Religious viewpoint. And lastly don’t talk about Yourself. This acronym will help you to feel less awkward in social settings.

From being overseas and leading covert intelligence briefings to orchestrating security programs for nearly 4,000 Soldiers, today’s guest knows firsthand what it means to protect and care for others. Through Others Over Self, a leadership mindset serving people in positions of influence to make a lasting impact on others, Shelly and her team are dedicated to serving others by providing training that connect people through shared life experiences and deepen interpersonal skills, all while celebrating our nation’s heroes.

Today’s guest, Shelly Rood served in the United States Army Reserves for 16 years as an Intelligence Officer and now is a small business owner and ordained minister, advocating for selfless service in action. Attaining the rank of Captain, Shelly served as an S2, a Company Commander and more. She is happily married and is tackling the daily challenge of raising two boys.

Listeners, if you would like to learn more about Shelly Rood and Others Over Self, check out their website here, or connect with them on social media via Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, or YouTube. We also covered a couple of resources in this podcast, one was Al-Anon about family and friends of alcoholics and another one was Give an Hour about finding professionals who are donating their time.

Resource Recon with Amanda and Amber

This week it is beyond AWN, so let’s chat about something beyond our network, but something that two of our command team members will be a part of is the 2022 Pillar Deployment Retreat. For those of you who don’t know about it, here are the details:

PILLAR Runs over 3 days, this November 4-6, with a variety of presentations to choose from each day. It’s 100% online!  There’s no need to do your hair or leave the house–they’ll be hosting speakers, giveaways, and discussions all day from their interactive Facebook group. PILLAR is partnering with seasoned military spouses & lifestyle experts to bring you short, actionable advice about everything from long-distance relationships to managing the stress of a deployment.  Each presentation is 5-15 minutes and can be watched any time you’re available! Plus, you’ll get to hear presentations from two of our very own: Kathleen Palmer & Sharita Knobloch.

Empowerment Patrol Report with Amanda

Do you know someone who deserves some recognition for helping make a difference in your life? Here at Army Wife Network, we are always looking to recognize military spouses and organizations who have empowered you! If you have someone in mind that you’d love to nominate as our Everyday Empowerment recipient, please do so on our website: armywifenetwork.com.

On the website, you’ll find the tab labeled, Get Involved, and then select Nominations, and Everyday Empowerment. Additionally, under that same Nominations tab, you will find our AWN Empowers, where you can nominate empowering organizations that will receive recognition along with a donation from AWN. We would love to give praise and recognition to spouses and organizations who are helping you throughout your milspouse journey.
