Destination Army Wife

My name is Mary and I’m the new girl here on Army Wife Network. I’m very excited to share my experiences and knowledge with all of our readers!

My soldier and I got married a little over five years ago. He’d already been enlisted for three years by then. We are currently at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. Prior to this duty station, my husband was stationed at Fort Shafter, Hawaii, and then Rivanna Station, Virginia.

My husband is my best friend. I know it sounds cliche to an extent, but it is true. I’ve known him since I was 15 years old, and we started dating right before I turned 17. We’ve pretty much grown into adulthood together.

We don’t have any children yet, but we do have one rambunctious, possibly psychotic, cat. She’s a 2-year-old gray ball of crazy—I mean—fur. I got her when she was about two months old while I was home visiting my family during a PCS. I guess I will give you all the courtesy of a warning if I start talking about my cat like she’s a small child.

While my husband was off starting his career in the military eight years ago, I was starting my career in college. My dream was to be a professional performance musician, but unfortunately it didn’t pan out. The music program there is one of the best in the country and highly competitive. After a while, music wasn’t fun. So, I took a leap of faith to earn a degree for another passion I had: writing. In high school, I briefly took a journalism course and knew that it was something I was very interested in doing. Four years later, I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with a concentration in music.

The military has come with both good and bad, as I’m sure all of you reading can attest to. It has given me the chance to live in new places, meet people I would have never met otherwise, and live life in a way that so few ever experience. On the flip side, being separated from my family can be tough, and deployments are never quite so easy.

I hope that sharing my life stories, and some of my insights about what I think it means to be a military spouse, a daughter, a sister, and a friend will give each of you a chance to learn about me and for us to learn from one another.
