Workshops for Warriors: School on a Mission

A school with a mission: Workshops for Warriors is a nonprofit school, which currently provides training for 162 students each year in welding, computer-aided design, milling, and machining. Students earn professional credentials that are “stackable and portable” and appealing to US manufacturers who are desperate for trained skilled labor.

“I loved the Navy and I would’ve stayed there forever. But I had to do something. I was so tired of seeing my friends dying of suicide and just being lost. These are guys that I had served with and they were hyper-capable, hyper-competent. All the sudden they would just be hollowed-out versions of themselves that were drifting aimlessly into the shadows,” veteran, Hernan Luis y Prado told Military Families Magazine. Luis y Prado founded Workshops for Warriors in response to seeing his Navy friends struggle.

Workshops for Warriors is located in San Diego and takes up three city blocks, which include housing and dining facilities with expansion plans for next year.

“Ninety-five percent of the program’s graduates receive job placements with an average salary of $60,000 a year,” said Military Families Magazine. Service members or honorably discharged veterans are eligible to apply for the school.
