DOD Sets to Launch Spouse Fellowships in 2023

 

For the first time ever the Department of Defense will be placing spouses in paid fellowship positions that will move with them.

 

While they have yet to say how many positions they will try to fill, they did say that they will welcome all interested employers, regardless how big or small their corporation is. 

 

While this is not the first military fellowship program made to empower spouses, it is the first time that the DOD has officially thrown their hat in the ring. Their big focus: remote jobs and jobs that can be picked up and continued after each PCS, with a particular focus on spouses living overseas.

 

Eddy Mentzer, the Defense Department’s associate director of Military Community Support Programs, told a news panel that they 

 

“have to find employer partners who will keep them employed,” he said. It doesn’t help, if an employer brings a spouse in for a 12-week fellowship, hires the spouse, and the spouse then has to leave after a year because of a PCS move. We have a focus on these challenges. There’s so much more to come.”

     U.S Marine Crowned Burpee Queen 

 

Sgt. Nahla Beard, stationed in Iwakuni, Japan, has made history- and the Guinness book of the world records- after completing 27 chest to ground burpees in one minute, the first female ever to do so.

 

Due to Covid restrictions a Guinness judge could not be in attendance so she had to film herself smashing the previous record.

 

She wasn’t alone though, as her fellow marines, and their family members, showed up in droves to support her.

 

Beard said in a video with DVIDS ( or Defense Visual Information Distribution Service) that she found a love for fitness after recovering from  a back injury. Later she said that she 

“got into high intensity tactical training for a really long time and participated in the HITT competition they had on base,” “That was really fun. It built my stamina to the point where I was able to do a lot of burpees, and then that’s when I looked up the world record out of curiosity.”

 

Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it gave this marine a pretty sweet bragging right.

 Look to the Skies November 6th, East Coast!

Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware will get more than a beachfront sunrise to look at on November 6!

 

The beach areas of these three states will get a front row view of the launch of the Antares rocket at approximately 5:50 am this upcoming Sunday morning.

 

The rocket will launch from Wallops Island, Virginia and head to the international space station.

 

This will be the rockets 18th trip out of our atmosphere and will be filled with goodies for our astronauts including supplies, equipment, and science investigations.

 

But be careful, rocket enthusiasts! November 6 is the ending of daylight savings time, so make sure you adjust your clocks accordingly.

 

Don’t want to camp out at the beach?

 

Wallops Island  will be open to visitors if you want to get a front row seat!

              Today in History (or tomorrow in this case)

 

On November 1st 1765 the British Empire passed the infamous Stamp Act that would be a tipping point in an already strained relationship between the American Colonies and England.

 

This tax which came in the form of a stamp was considered a gross overreach by the colonies as it was not approved by the American legislature and was only imposed on the colonies. It could also  only be paid in hard to find English sterling instead of colonial coins.

 

This domino of oppression eventually spiraled into a bunch of grumpy colonists throwing tea into Boston Harbor and We’ve been making waves ever since. And stopped drinking tea.
