Summer of Staycations

If you’re like me, you look forward to taking a vacation at some point in the year. I know that it’s always my favorite week out of the year. However, with COVID, travel restrictions, and social distancing measures in place, it has made vacationing this year a challenge.

I know that for me as well as many other service members here in Alaska, traveling out of the state is completely out of the question for the time being. Army personnel who are stationed here in Alaska cannot leave the state unless they have an Emergency Travel Plan due to COVID travel restrictions put in place for US Army Alaska.

So this year, I, like many other people, took a staycation near my home in Fort Wainwright, Alaska. It’s my first year here so I definitely enjoyed being able to explore near the place that I call home for now. For those of you who are stationed on or near Fort Wainwright or are planning a trip up here one of these days, here are my top three recommendations for places to visit to make your staycation worth while.

1. Denali National Park

Denali
Denali is a must see. The view there is amazing, and if you are keep your eyes peeled, you will see plenty of wildlife.

Located two hours from Fort Wainwright, the drive is most definitely worth it. However, the park is only open from May until sometime in September after the first snowfall. It is definitely a must see even if you only drive though the park. There are also plenty of hiking trails for the more adventurous spirits. Pets are allowed but only along the main road and must stay on a leash the entire time. It is definitely an all day trip or multiple day trip if you want to explore the area more. For more information on Denali visit the National Park’s website.

The two hour drive is definitely worth the picturesque views when entering Denali.
Stay alert while driving though Denali and you will more than likely see wildlife. I snapped a picture of this moose from my car.

2. Tanana Lakes and Recreation Area

Tanana Lakes is an area that the whole family can enjoy. I enjoy taking my kayak out on the lake. The lake is fairly shallow, but the water doesn’t get too warm so beware if you fall in. There are also kayaks for rent at the lake and a boat dock area to put boats and jet skis in the water. A beach area is there as well for you to just sit and relax. If you are the type who enjoys going to the rifle range, Cushman Range at Tanana Lakes is the perfect spot for you. You can check it out here

The lake during the summer here in Alaska is my favorite place. The view is beyond amazing and I can easily spend a whole day here.

3. Chena Hot Springs

Located 50 miles down Chena Hotsprings road, it is the perfect little getaway to relax and unplug, just for the day or even overnight. They are open 365 days a year, and in the winter, it is a great place to see the Northern lights. Soaking in the hotsprings is a must do, although you must be 18 or older to do so. They also have an indoor pool and hot tub area open for the whole family. While you are there be sure to check out the ice museum, it’s definitely cold in the museum so make sure to pack warm clothing.

Those are my top three recommendations for staycation activities near Fort Wainwright. With COVID, traveling is difficult but checking out your local area and taking staycations give you the opportunity to visit places near home you might not otherwise explore. I know that I would not have explored as much near home if it was not for COVID. I would highly encourage you to take a staycation if possible, and enjoy all that your local area has to offer.
