The Evolution of Business Cards
Business cards are an essential tool when exchanging information to network, build rapport and provide basic contact information. The business card is small enough to place in a wallet and can be easily accessed for quick memory reference.
They include information such as name, company name, phone number, email address, job title, company website, social media handles and company logo. Business cards give you an ability to exercise creativity, provide a personal touch and make a tangible first impression when meeting new connections.
Is it necessary to have a business card in today’s professional landscape?
While business cards aren’t completely obsolete, there are other options such as virtual business cards, QR codes and LinkedIn profiles. As we’ve shifted into a digital dominant era, you now have the capability to scan your LinkedIn profile’s QR code and develop a connection.
Here are the steps to access your LinkedIn QR code:
- Open the LinkedIn app on your mobile device
- Tap the QR code in the Search bar at the top of your LinkedIn homepage
- Tap the MY CODE tab to find your QR code.
- You can tap SAVE TO GALLERY to save a copy of your QR code to your mobile device’s photo gallery
While purchasing business cards to provide during networking events is still acceptable, you can also use your smartphone to scan LinkedIn QR codes to connect. Your LinkedIn QR code makes sharing your profile and connecting with others easier and depicts your ability to utilize modern day software.
Design your own virtual business card.
With some basic research online, there are several apps and companies you can utilize to create a design that includes interactive links and contact information that can be updated without the need to reprint.
Job seekers are encouraged to utilize the digital options available as a way to connect with potential employers, recruiters and talent acquisition specialists. Demonstrating technological ability is a necessary skill in a constantly evolving workforce and can set you apart as you look for your next career venture.
To ensure that your name is remembered, consider each of your business card options carefully to make that lasting first impression.
