What’s Your Obstacle?

Somewhere in early 2016 I discovered a fitness group that would alter the overall course of my life; I just didn’t know it then. Melissa would lead regular workout sessions in a few places around Fort Carson, and every meetup would vary in group size, experience, and of course, the workouts. Melissa’s positivity was tangible, infectious, and she made us believers. Believers in her, believers in ourselves, and believers in the group. She is what made Body Blast more than just a way to pass the time, but a lifelong pursuit for me.

Just as in all things in life, nothing stays the same, most especially within our beloved military community. I’ve found, though, that the friends and acquaintances I made under Melissa’s watch have not only continued on social media, but some even flourished into strong friendships that have affected how I lead my life today, years later and across the USA. It’s because of this radiant collection of individuals that I now understand that fitness is a wonderful addition to lifestyle and one best accomplished with a community to back you, cheer for, and even push you if need be.

In my youth, I never woke up with the intent of “working out.” Goodness no. I had the benefit of youth itself keeping me strong, as well as dance, cross country, soccer, and track & field. Exercise for the sake of exercise, never crossed my mind. Sports accidentally kept me healthy.

Now at somewhere over 40, I have to be deliberate about maintaining my strength and my overall health. The fact that I have four children watching me adds to the accountability, but the choice is one I have to make daily. What helps me suit up every day, is seeing so many of those faces from years past on Facebook doing the same thing. Showing up, working out, continuing their journeys, and they don’t even realize that their postings are still motivating me, inspiring me, and encouraging me to continuously challenge myself.

Melissa, Danielle, Genevieve, Jocelyn, Kayla, Meghan, Meg, Daisy, Ally, Destiny, Amanda, Kristine, Velma and Eve… I’m so grateful for all you are. You’ve all taught me life lessons in your own way whether you realize it or not. I think of you often; as I’m struggling, overcoming tough challenges, pushing myself… all of it. Not just in fitness, but my personal life as well. Parent life, military life… on harder days when grit, a smile, and the right attitude are what’s needed to get me through.

All of it.

You have taught me how to face life’s obstacles. What a gift. Thank you. Thank you for inviting me to take on a challenge as big as the Spartan so many years ago. Thank you for including me and making me a part of your team. It’s because of you that I race today, run still, and show up for all of the challenges ahead. I know I can. You’ve shown me how.

And with life’s blessing, I hope to pay it forward.

This last race I dedicate to you. Three cheers for the helpers, the role models, and the genuine friends. May we know at least one of you during the course of our lives.

Elisa

Elisa is a mother of four, a college student, the first generation of her family to be born in the United States, and a wife to a Soldier. While her husband's story is very similar, he is 2nd generation military as his father served before him as an Airborne Infantryman in the Army. Elisa's work has been featured in The San Diego Union Tribune as well as various social media sites. She is currently attending school with the long-term goal of obtaining her Masters, but being an involved mom is her biggest joy, passion, and motivator. When she’s not doing schoolwork, she volunteers her time in her children’s scouting troops and offers her support to her husband’s unit. Her true passion though, lies in the worlds of dance, acting, and writing.

This is so cool, Elisa! Love that not only has Sparta/Obstacle racing helped with your fitness, but also with your social support circle. Thanks a ton for sharing.
