It’s Okay to Have a “Meh” Day
I’m the one who is always happy, always seeing the bright side. I’m not annoyingly cheerful, but I’m generally that friend that you turn to, even when you’re having a really rotten day, that can always make you smile.
Yes, I have bad days, too, and that’s okay. Sometimes I even (gasp!) wallow in them a bit.
Here’s my reasoning:
1. As my friend Kevin said to me, “Gotta love ‘meh’ days. Makes the great days even better.” It’s all a matter of perspective.
2. You know the part where I said that I’m the one that helps people when they’re down? Having a bit of a gray day gives someone else the chance to feel good about helping someone feel better.
3. Angst is a good source for art. Come one, that’s something we all know, right? It’s why Tom Waits, David Sedaris, George Carlin, and Vincent van Gogh are or were all great artists.
4. It adds depth to life. I mean, think about it. The richest and yummiest things have a hint of bitterness in them. Coffee, anyone? Chocolate? Guinness, even?
5. On a gray day, brilliance can be earth-shakingly, startlingly brilliant. On a rainy spring day, that sneaky beam of sunshine that seeks and finds a daffodil? Magic.
6. No matter how wallowy, gray, dreary, or meh the day is, love will seek you out, find you, and bash you over the head until you eventually come out of it. It could be a friend, a family member, a stranger, or the best dog in the world. Love will get you every time.
So, here’s the deal. Go ahead and have a bad, dreary, indifferent day. It’s okay, because it will end, it will get better, it will get brighter, and then the good days will be even more amazing.
