3 Things That Mean A Lot to Milspouses

Being a military spouse means I’m pretty tough. I can do a lot and take even more. I experience life in a way that most people can’t imagine. I’m the 3%! The 3% that know the importance of care packages, how a home can be made anywhere, and that friends do not need to be in the same time zone to be valuable. I also know that there are a few things that mean a lot to milspouses and military families.

Here are three things that pull at my heartstrings and make me shed a tear or two:

1. The National Anthem

Yeah, it gets me every time. Whenever I hear the Star-Spangled Banner, it pulls my heartstrings. When I see men and women stand, the flag fly, and hear the song sung, it gets to me. I get a little misty eyed. I know that this patriotic song is more than just a formality but contains great meaning. This emotionally-charged song gets played and military families and civilians alike unite to pay our respects to those who have fought for our freedoms and families.

2. A Battlefield Cross

I always get emotional seeing a battlefield cross. I personally know the meaning behind such a significant image. I know that behind each set of boots is a service member and family. I know that there is a story of a childhood and a life that was left unfinished. I know that there is a story of battle buddies and honor. I know that this powerful image represents a hero and a memorial to one patriotic soul who believed in their country.

3. A Homecoming

I get all kinds of feelings when I see these, whether my own or another. It’s a wonderful sight to see a family, friends, and even pets reunited. The running, the leaping, the hugging, kisses, tears, and smiles always get me. I have attended many of them in person, and I will tell you that you cannot be in that room without feeling the tangible emotion in the air. You see priceless videos on social media of children being surprised by a parent in ACUs, kids dressed in red, white, and blue, holding flags and signs, and even pets leaping into the arms of their human they have missed. The moment is priceless, and it’s hard to watch it even from a distance without getting a little choked up.

I think that some non-military people get emotional experiencing these three, but a military spouse?

We get it.

We know the cost. We know the sacrifice. We know the men and women behind these patriotic moments. We are the 3%, and yes…it gets to us every time.

Army Wife Network is blessed with many military spouses who share their journey through writing in our Experience blog category. As we PCS in our military journey, bloggers too sometimes move on. Their content and contributions are still valued and resourceful. Those posts are reassigned under "Retired Bloggers" in order to allow them to remain available as content for our AWN fans.

Chills up and down my arms every time I hear the National Anthem/other patriotic hymns. 🙂 I spent the 4th of July in Boston once during college, and a few friends and I went to the Esplanade to hear the Pops play. One of the friends I went with happened to be a French exchange student, and we thought it would be a little awkward during the “patriotic singalong,” but she got one of the programs with the lyrics and sang along with all of us, even to silly ones like “You’re A Grand Old Flag” that I hadn’t heard or thought about since I could count my age on my fingers. It was such a fun night and she genuinely enjoyed herself. It was so cool—yay patriotic hymns bringing friends together!
