31 Days of Fall Fun in October

Fall is my absolute favorite season! I love the smells, the colors ,and the holidays associated with this time of year. Since it’s my favorite, I thought I’d share with you the 31 ways I choose to celebrate fall in October.

1. Create a fall potpourri that will have your house smelling like fall.

2. Go for a drive around your city to see all the beautiful leaves as they change colors. Take pictures to savor the memory.

3. Buy a candy that makes you think of your childhood. What was your favorite candy to get when you went trick or treating or one that was always in the candy dish around your house? Share it with your kids or hide it and eat it late at night after they are asleep.

4. Put on jackets and go for a walk around the neighborhood with your family. It’s perfect weather, with just a slight chill in the air.

5. Plan your Halloween costumes for this year. What’s a homemade theme that everyone in the family can participate in? Make a list of supplies needed.

6. Bake a pie. Apple, pumpkin, sweet potato or chocolate, whatever makes you think of fall.

7. Find a pumpkin patch that offers hayrides. I love picking a pumpkin straight from the patch with the family.

8. Do something nice for your neighbor. Bake them some fresh cookies, or maybe an extra pie from day 6.

9. Make your Halloween costume. Let each family member have a job either collecting supplies or putting the costumes together. Do it now, and you’ll be ready for Halloween.

10. Make your kids a special dinner. My favorite is this hamburger.

11. Carve pumpkins. Look for a stencil together as a family and carve your pumpkin in a non-traditional way. Wouldn’t an Army stencil look so cool illuminated at night?

12. Try roasted pumpkin seeds.

13. Watch a scary movie together as a family. Or a fun cartoon. Eat candy corn and Laffy Taffy until your bellies hurt.

14. Play in a big pile of leaves. Rake them up together as a family, then take turns jumping in. Get lots of pictures of this activity!

15. Play a game together. How about Halloween-inspired bingo, where you use candy corn as the bingo markers?

16. Finish your Halloween costumes. Take a family picture, and email it to all your friends or make it your new profile picture on Facebook.

17. Go apple picking!

18. Make caramel apples with your freshly picked apples. They don’t have the wax on them that the apples from the store do, so the caramel sticks much better.

19. Bake pumpkin bread, and drizzle with sugar icing.

20. Make a special treat for the families whose loved ones are deployed this year. Let them know you understand how difficult it is to be away from loved ones during holidays.

21. Visit a haunted house together as a family. Or, a friendly house for those of you that scare easily.

22. Make hot apple cider with any apples that are left from your apple picking adventure. Sit outside while you enjoy it.

23. Play flag football. Invite the whole neighborhood to join in.

24. Make chili for dinner. Save the leftovers in the freezer for a cold winter day.

25. Decorate the outside of your house to welcome fall visitors. Gather a basket full of the colorful leaves to set by the front door for that extra special touch.

26. Put on your warmest clothes and visit the zoo. I love the Zoo Boo that ours puts on every year, but you can find other locations that are fun and you and visit while wearing costumes.

27. Donate a few canned goods to a food bank. They start to run low around holidays.

28. Visit a corn maze.

29. Put together a scrapbook of all your October fun.

30. Pick out which treats you’ll be handing out on Halloween night. I have to wait until the day before; otherwise, it disappears quickly!

31. Treat your neighbors to some epic treats. Let them know how thankful you are to have them in your neighborhood as you pass out candy to the kids.

Do you have a favorite thing to do with your family to celebrate fall? I’d love to hear of any traditions that I might need to try with my own family!
