4 Things to Let Go of in the New Year

The New Year acts as a turning point for a lot of us. We make resolutions and vow to do something better—diet, exercise, self-improvement, employment or educational goals, and more.

But while we’re working on achieving something new once we turn the calendar over, many of us heap worry and concerns on ourselves that we cannot control. We overburden our hearts and our minds, with guilt, negativity, expectations (sometimes unrealistic or out of our control), or worries or pain about our past.

How much are you carrying around inside your head that you will never have the power to change?

Celebrating Volkstrauertag as an American Living in Germany

Living overseas offers plenty of new opportunities for Americans: food, traditions, cultural events, and more. It’s probably the best part about the experience and why I urge people to accept an OCONUS posting if one is offered.

During my first year living in Bavaria, a heavily Catholic state in Germany, I learned about the various Catholic holidays that don’t carry as much weight in the United States. I celebrated my first Fasching, the German version of Carnival or Mardi Gras, complete with a parade prior to the lenten season. I’ve attended my fair share of Volksfests and other fests popular in Germany.

I turned 30 this year and realized I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up.

My husband and I attended our first Strong Bonds retreat in August. It was such a great experience for us. We both went into the retreat hoping we could learn something, despite not having any glaring issues in our relationship.

But we did learn how to connect better.

When living overseas, it’s very easy to quickly begin missing certain things about the good ol’ US of A. It’s not that other countries necessarily “get it wrong,” but rather that it’s different from what Americans are used to. Over time, we adjust to the host nation’s culture, and it becomes our new normal.

But really, we still kind of miss certain things.

Happy Birthday, USA: An ode to my home, sweet home

Hey there, America! Remember me? I know it’s been a while. For the past two years I’ve been residing in Germany, following the love of my life to yet another duty location. And as much as I love it here (and I definitely do), I often miss you.

You’re 242 years old today, Independence Day, but, my, oh my, you certainly look good. You’ve been through a lot over these past almost two and a half centuries. You’ve had your ups and downs, but I still would choose you over living almost anywhere else.

You will always be my home, sweet home.
