AWTR Show 586: Army Religious Education Programs

Show Title:  Army Religious Education Programs

Show Date:  Nov. 7, 2016

Show Number:  #586

On this episode, our featured guest is Cindy Cline, the director of religious education at USAG Fort Sill. Cindy shares how Army religious education serves military families in more ways than you might think.

Cindy was the spouse of a National Guard and active-duty service member for 28 years. As a carpenter’s daughter, she moved frequently, living in seven states before the age of 10. Her family eventually settled in Minnesota and Wisconsin, where she completed high school. She was offered a full scholarship at Northwestern Oklahoma State University where she met her husband, Jack, and married in 1985. In 1990, Jack transferred from the Army National Guard to active-duty service, and the military adventure began! Duty stations included Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Herzo Base, Germany; Fort Sam Houston, Texas; Baumholder, Germany; and Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

For 18 years, Cindy worked in human services, specifically with developmental disabilities. She worked in direct care, managed group homes, worked as a job coach and program director, and finally in quality assurance. In 1996, she began a faith journey that would eventually lead her to leave her career field and serve Army families as a NAF contractor in religious education as a coordinator/pastoral coordinator/youth ministry director from 2001 to 2015 at various installations. She returned to school in 2008, finished her Bachelor’s in Human Service Management in 2012, and then went on to a Master’s program in Religious Education. Cindy completed her Master’s program at Felician University in 2016 and has been serving as the DRE at Fort Sill since 2015.

In her spare time, Cindy enjoys spending time with her husband of 31 years and their daughter, Rebecca. Her favorite pastimes are travel, crochet, photography, gardening, and time with friends.

Military Family News You Can Use:

As the holiday season grows closer, so do the final dates for sending mail overseas in order for service members to receive it before Christmas. The United States Postal Service has already announced their 2016 final mail dates.

The Postal Service “mail by” recommendations for holiday mail to APO/FPO/DPO addresses are:

  • USPS Retail Ground: Nov. 7.
  • Space Available Mail (SAM): Nov. 25
  • Parcel Airlift Mail (PAL): Dec. 2
  • First-Class Mail (letters and cards) and Priority Mail: Dec. 9, except to ZIPs starting in 093 (contingency areas), where it’s Dec. 2.
  • Priority Mail Express Military Service: Dec. 16, except to 093 ZIPs.  This express service is not available to those areas.

Postal Service officials have put together a free Military Care Kit based on items most frequently requested by military families, with two Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes and two medium Flat Rate boxes, tape, address labels and customs forms. The Flat Rate boxes are free, and the Postal Service gives a $2 postage discount per Flat Rate box to those going to an APO/FPO/DPO address. For example, the discounted price for sending the largest Flat Rate box is $16.75.

You can stuff as many items as you can fit into these boxes, as long as the package weighs less than 70 pounds, and pay the flat rate.

Hot on AWN This Week:

We have two big things to share this week:

  • AWN experience contributor Mary Spangler recently wrote about her PCS from Washington to Illinois in Post PCS: The Next Adventure. She moved from one side of the country to another, and from one joint base to an Air Force base. She writes, “We moved here at the end of September. So far, things are going well, although living on an Air Force base has been a big adjustment. However, as I’ve said many times, wherever you are or end up is always about what you make it.”
  • Compliments can have a lot of power in our milspouse life, and today, Sharita shares about the best compliment she ever received from her husband and how it was also an important reminder that they are, in fact, on the same team in Best Compliment Ever: The Ultimate Battle Buddy

Public Service Announcement

This week’s PSA comes from the American Red Cross. Whether you’re the parent of a child joining the military or a member of the military or veteran communities, the new Hero Care App will connect you to important resources that can help you through both emergency and non-emergency situations.
