AWTR Show #869: FINANCIAL DOMINANCE: Your Battle Plan for a Richer Life

The biggest misconception about saving money is thinking it’s an important thing to do. Saving money is not an important thing to do. Just like breathing is not an important thing to do, but rather a necessity. Frank Molinar dives into how to set yourself up to live your best financial life in his book FINANCIAL DOMINANCE: Your Battle Plan for a Richer Life.

Frank started advising service members around the time his son got a recommendation into West Point. And he discovered the best way to reach members of the military community was to use their language. For instance, Frank explains that the best way to eliminate debt is to secure the perimeter which means you have to build yourself a meaningful amount of savings. In his book he also gets into ways to stop the bleeding with your finances.

Frank Molinar is a leading authority in Financial Readiness training to those with a military mindset. Through his work with the Dept of Defense, Arizona’s Attorney General, the AZ Dept of Veteran Services, and multiple VSOs he has personally logged over 4,000 hours counseling service members and veterans from all ranks, stages, and issues, and he has spoken to tens of thousands on the principles of financial readiness. A prolific speaker, storyteller, Certified Financial Planner™, and seasoned business owner, his book, keynotes, and workshops are consistently rated 5 stars for being relevant, educational, and motivational. Frank is based out of Phoenix, AZ.

Resource Recon with Annie and Brooklyn

This week we are showcasing a post from our blog titled, An Open Letter to My Military Child by :

Buddy, you have been through so much in the past year. You lived in every moment. Your Dad and I, we had moments of trying to soak it all up with you, and others when we thought we were too busy.  But you always redirected our attention to the fun, the exciting, the mesmerizing. Thank you.

It’s a beautiful outlook you have, and one that served you well through our first military move.

Empowerment Patrol Report with Amanda B.

This week we are showcasing Army Wife Network’s Everyday Empowerment recipient: Kristine Scrip, who was nominated by our very own Jolene McNutt. Jolene states:

Kristine was my first friend in moving to our current duty station. She answered a Facebook post, a plea of mine when I was looking for an occasional babysitter. We have had so much fun together since that first meeting. From perusing markets to coffee dates, hiking together, even swapping dogs when one of us is out of town. She is a one-of-a-kind. Kristine is kind, sweet, intelligent, thoughtful and those are just the tip of the iceberg. She supports her active duty husband, works full time, and is running a side hustle called Thrifted Lucky Finds, a vintage online thrift shop. You can check it out on Instagram here.

Thank you to Kristine for doing your part to empower military families all across the globe.

News 6 with Jolene

Here is this week’s News 6 mashup of stories for the week of Jan. 17, 2022, straight from AWN News 6 Correspondent, Jolene McNutt:

Move.mil Moves to Military OneSource Website

Move.mil, the Department of Defense’s PCS online portal, has moved to MilitaryOneSource.mil. This includes access to Defense Personal Property System, also called DPS, it also includes a customer service contacts page and moving resources page.

2020 Military Demographics Profile Released

Did you ever wonder what the demographics of the military look like? The 2020 Demographics Profile was released last month. A quick peek shows that 82.8 percent of active duty military members are male and 17.2 percent are female. There’s an almost identical split between enlisted and officers: 82.4 percent of military members are enlisted and 17.6 percent are officers. The 222 page report goes more in depth and compares trends from previous surveys in 2005, 2010 and 2015.

Five States Added to Military Retirement Tax Free List

Five more states have made military retirement tax free. “Retirees living in Arizona and Utah will see the changes take effect immediately,” said Military.com. But the other three won’t begin the tax break until the 2022 tax season next year. Those states are Indiana, Nebraska and North Carolina. With these new additions a total of 26 states do not tax military retirement, “nine offer partial exemptions and six states, plus the District of Columbia, fully tax military retirement. Nine states do not impose income tax on their citizens,” according to Military.com.

Army National Guard Soldiers Fix Djiboutian Well

A team of Army National Guard Soldiers helped fix a well in Djibouti, reported Army Times. The well had a leak. The well was the only source of drinking water in the village that receives just five inches of rainfall a year. Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa was monitoring the leak for months, but didn’t have a team with the skills to fix it until recently. “Sgt. Beau Heithoff, a task force engineer specialist and a combat engineer with the Nebraska Army National Guard, said fixing the well became a team effort with the villagers,” reported Army Times. Heithoff also happens to work as a plumber in his civilian job. In less than a day and with the right knowledge and supplies, the well was repaired.
“Our effort is about much more than fixing a well,” said 1st Lt. James Fortson said. “It is about demonstrating that we care about our partners, and that we want our relationship to last.”
