I Have a Lot To Learn

Recently, I “opened” my very small business for orders. I was a bit nervous, but I did successfully get a few orders. As I was working on a few, I noticed the time and supplies took more time and required more supplies than I originally thought. Apparently I have a lot to learn. I did—do—try my best not to overcharge for an item, but I now understand why some handmade items cost so much.

After I did the math (supplies, shipping, time), I realized I was basically making these items for free. I hate having to eat my own money and barely making anything, so I figured I go back to my “business drawing board.”

I’ve played with the idea of investing in a quick weaver, so to speak. My best friend shared the link with me and said the quick weaver will help lighten the load. The weaver is about $60 and would be a great investment. The investment will cut the time it takes to make just one adult hat in half! The holidays are quickly approaching, and I want to be able to sell a few items so customers can give them as gifts and bring in a few extra holiday bucks for my own family.

I often ask for help or advice regarding the things I make to sell from my friend. She’s kind enough to give me helpful advice on how to go about completing some projects. Not too long ago, she gave me some of the best advice about making items. She told me to get a notebook and start writing everything down. Every single last detail about the things I make, such as the cost of the materials, the different inches, what size they equal (per item), and how much time the item took to make. This will help me in the future for handmade items so I can price them accordingly. She’s a talented costume designer and seamstress and has been my rock through out this whole process. She sells her items, too, and we bounce ideas off each other or just vent.

I want my small business to be successful, but within reason since I’m still trying to balance it alongside taking care of my home, children, pets, and myself. This is a learning process for me and hopefully I can take what I’ve learned and become more successful in the coming years. I’m also hoping some of the people I’ve made things for give me an awesome shoutout regarding their products!

Everything is a learning experience. I learn new things every day and do my best to retain what I’ve learned. The goal will always be to build my skill and grow my business. I’m willing to go the extra mile and take the time to do so.

Having your own side business can be overwhelming at times, but it’s also satisfying and fulfilling. The simple fact that someone loves something I made with my own two hands is extra satisfying.

I’m grateful I was given this chance to do something I love and sprinkle a little joy in the world, one stitch at a time.

Anastassia Kennedy

Anastassia is originally from North Carolina, born and raised in Fort Bragg. She is a military child turned spouse, so the Army has been a part of who she is for her entire life. She and her husband have been married for six years and have two boys (2 and 5 years old) and are currently stationed in Washington, Illinois (for now at least). She is hoping her next assignment will take her back down South next because she does not enjoy snow filled winters! She is a stay at home mom with a knack for Crocheting (she actually turned her hobby into a side job- how cool is that?) She also enjoys yoga, podcasts, reading, thrifting, and exploring cities and villages. Most of her exploring various places is food related as she loves trying new foods (and finding cool tea rooms) so she can broaden her pallet. Not to mention, you always meet the nicest people in restaurants and bakeries! Anastassia is a fun-loving person who is always ready at a moment's notice to enjoy life, have fun, and make new friends.

Congrats on the new business, Anastassia! And yes, the learning curve is huge for any new experience, especially as an entrepreneur. I can’t wait to hear about your future successes.
