Marines Parade for a Cause in Hollywood

Hollywoo 90th annual Christmas Parade took place yesterday, December 4th, with 5,000 participants marching, including The Marine Corps Band. Actor Danny Trejo served as grand Marshall of the happy affair.

The parade started in 1928 and is used to bring attention to the marines toys for tots program and has become a much loved Hollywood tradition, only skipping years 1942-1944 due to WW2 and 2020 due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

Missed the parade in person? Fortunately the taping of the parade will air on December 16 as a two hour special on the CW network from 8-10 pm EST.

The marine toys for tots program brings an average of 18 million toys a year to girls and boys in need. According to their official website“The mission of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is to assist the U. S. Marine Corps in providing a tangible sign of hope to economically disadvantaged children at Christmas”. To find out more about the program or to donate visit toysfortots.org

Female Navy Uniforms Get a Long Over Due Redo

This is no longer your grandma’s navy uniform! The Navy Exchange Service Command’s Navy Clothing & Textile Research Facility or (NCTRF) for short, gathered 100 female active duty Navy servicemembers to remeasure the decades old standard uniform at Naval Air Station North Island, California.

“Over the past four years, we have been working with anthropometric data on current female body types/sizes and clothing industry experts to update the patterns to reflect an accuracy in the development of a new Navy fit type and sizing for women Sailors,” said Dr. Brianna Plummer, Supervisory Textile Technologist, Design & Testing Group told Navy.mil. “The ultimate goal of this effort is to update all uniform patterns to create better fit that require fewer alterations and resulting in the commonality of sizing across all uniform items.”

The women had their measurements taken while also trying on different uniform prototypes. This evaluation was the third and final one for this data collecting process. The first two were held in Virginia earlier this year.

“The data gathered during the West Coast fit evaluation, along with the data gathered from previous fit evaluations, will significantly contribute to the direction of our research,” said Plummer.

“It was important that we had a wide diversity of female body types and sizes documented, so we would have a complete view of today’s women Sailors. NEXCOM is committed to providing certified, high-quality Navy uniforms with a focus on continuing improvements to fit, comfort, design and durability.”

While it’s sometimes not a good idea to mess with the classics, in this case it is a welcome change for our navy servicewomen.  Learn more at navy.mil

Devotion Delivers

New Movie Highlighting “The Forgotten War” and some forgotten heroes soars into theaters.

A heartbreaking but uplifting true story of friendship between the first black naval aviator, Jesse Brown, and navy academy graduate Thomas Hudner. The story is set in the first year of the Korean War and is based off of a book written about their friendship by Adam Makos.

This author hopes that his book being told on the silver screen will finally give the Korean War, often called the forgotten war, the attention it deserves.

He told military times that:

“The Korean War just has never gotten its due. “It came on the heels of World War II, and it was a war nobody wanted. World War II was supposed to end it all, and suddenly, we’re going back? They didn’t want to celebrate it, so they didn’t make many movies. It has M*A*S*H as its legacy. Hollywood electrified people to the D-Day landings, the Omaha Beach scene in ‘Saving Private Ryan’ and the Normandy landings — they suddenly exposed millions of people to these battles they never heard of,”

Makos said. “We’re gonna expose them to some heroes, we’re gonna expose them to the places where it took place, to the battles themselves.”

The reviews are flying sky high as well, even RogerEbert.com says “Devotion” manages a perfect landing.

Today in History

On December 5th, 1848 president James Polk confirmed the discovery of gold in California in his annual message to Congress.

This announcement would trigger the California gold rush of 1849, its participants still affectionately called the 49ers.

Places like San Francisco went from tiny one horse towns to booming cities and put California on the map. While wealth came to few, California prospered.

Plus, 49ers is a pretty catchy name for a football team! Find out more at history.com.

That’s it for me! This is Emma Tighe with news 6, signing out.
