This Week in History

Prospectors heading to California in 1849 were dubbed “forty-niners”. Almost 100,000 people arrived in California hoping to strike gold. Settlements popped up, and many enterprising forty-niners made their own way by capitalizing on the miners with merchandise sales, books, prints, food and tools. Learn more at LOC.gov
