Something a Little “Supernatural”

Halloween is so close I can taste it. It’s not my most favorite of holidays, but there is something about it that is near and dear to my heart. Now, I am going to be a supernatural fangirl and sound a little bit obsessed, but I literally cannot help myself. It was only a matter of time before I decided to blog about this, but given the wonderful month of October, I think this post’s subject matter is quite appropriate and perfect considering.

But first….

I used to love watching scary movies. I remember when The Ring came out. It was part of a slew of PG-13 horror movies. It was pretty awesome because I was a teenager and a lot of the time I couldn’t actually see R-rated movies without my parents present. I didn’t see it in the theater, but rather at a friend’s house. We were there alone, and I remember the phone ringing in the movie after that dumb girl watched the video of impending doom. (Okay, okay, I guess she couldn’t have known exactly what she was in for, but still.) Seconds later, my friend’s house phone rang and scared the crap out of both of us, and of course, being that we were silly teenage girls, we let just about any noise scare us, as if we were next on that crazy dead girl’s list.

I spent a lot of time watching scary movies, television shows, and having fun being scared by them. I’m not sure why, exactly, but I’ve always been interested in the idea of ghosts and things that we can’t necessarily explain. Although, television shows documenting real-life cases are a bit more horrifying since they are usually based on the experiences of real people.

I think my love for most things scary made me inclined to watch the first episode of a show called Supernatural. I remember seeing the promos for it. I was a freshman in college (does that age me or what?), and I remember being crazy excited for it. That’s way back when The CW was The WB. I watched the pilot, and was basically hooked.

I think what drew me in about this show is the relationship between the Winchester brothers, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles). They hunt monsters.

They both approach this differently, and it makes for a very interesting dynamic between them. An added bonus is that the writers take great care in making sure the mythology and lore used in the show is accurate. Most of the monsters can be found in various cultural myths and legends all around the world. To name just a few, they include djinn, vampires, shape shifters, gods, angry spirits, werewolves, demons, witches, and just about everything in between.

The first three seasons focused on the brothers finding their father, a demon that killed their mother, and the consequences of making a deal with a demon. From season four and on, there is an angel and demon storyline, and I’ve really enjoyed some of the places they’ve taken it without losing the importance of the relationships that each character has with one another. It doesn’t hurt that the Winchesters save the world a few times either.

Halloween comes once a year, but I have a little bit of it in my life many days out of every year. I spent two months this summer rewatching every episode in anticipation of the premiere of season 10. (I know, 10 seasons! Wowza.) We are now about three episodes into this new season, and the writers still don’t cease to amaze me. They’ve perfected heartbreak, drama, unexpected plot twists, love, hate, desperation, and more. I have to say, though, some of the best shows were when they outwardly made fun of the show and the actors (“The French Mistake”). There’s so much to love about it that it’s hard not to go a little nuts when there’s a break in between seasons or episodes.

I think what has kept my interest in things that go bump in the night has been this show. It renewed my love of things that are scary, and perhaps made me a bit of a fangirl. If you’re looking to add something fun to your Halloween fright night, consider adding Supernatural to the repertoire. It will definitely satisfy the scary, funny, and sometimes gory needs of scary-story lovers everywhere. Don’t forget the pie.
