Milk N Mamas Baby Puts Moms First

Choosing the right breast pump deserves thoughtful research, and who supplies your breast pump is as important as which brand you choose. The latter might be more nuanced than you think, because every mom has different needs. That’s why Milk N Mamas Baby puts moms first.

If you’re a first time mom, you’ve probably already heard from friends, family, and even acquaintances about which breast pump brand is the best. Even if you’re waiting for your second or third child to arrive, you’ve likely been the recipient of generous opinions on your next pump. Fortunately for military moms and milspouses, TRICARE insurance covers the full cost of a personal breast pump, including popular brands like Spectra and Medela.

But what works for your friends isn’t necessarily going to be the best for your body and your baby. “What’s ideal for one mom and her lifestyle may not be ideal for another mom,” says Krisi LaMont, Founder of Milk N Mamas Baby.

“The most important thing I do when speaking to a mama, is listen,” LaMont said. “All moms want to know what’s new and what’s the best. Some moms call in with a particular pump in mind, but once we share insight into what makes a pump good, better, or best, they are thankful to learn there might be a better breast pump option for them.”

Advocating for breastfeeding moms: breast pumps for all

LaMont’s story is unique. A single mother, independent and successful in her medical equipment sales position, she followed a call to start her own business where she could advocate for mothers while lending critical direction and reliable information about breastfeeding alongside supplying moms with the best breast pumps and accessories available.

She heard that call while visiting a local hospital for work. “A case manager in the NICU asked me if I could assist her with getting a breast pump for a mom who had a 25-week-old baby that wasn’t faring well. The antibodies in a mother’s breast milk alone can increase an infant’s survival rate, and this baby needed every bit of help it could get,” LaMont said.

The company LaMont worked for didn’t carry breast pumps, and when the case manager told her the two supply companies the hospital worked with were either denying the mother a rental pump while her baby was in NICU or bargaining for a sale in another department as a trade off, the stakes soared. The mother-in-need had few resources to pay out of pocket, and at the time, insurance companies did not cover breastfeeding needs, only hospital grade rentals.

A business looking to profit when an infant’s life was in the balance did not sit well with LaMont’s conscience and ran counter to her core values, so she advocated for that mother and her baby—and won.

Not long after this encounter, laws were passed that mandated full coverage for breast pumps by all insurance providers. TRICARE later followed the mandate of the Affordable Care Act for breastfeeding coverage and made the benefit available to all TRICARE beneficiaries.

“I believe every voice counts,” LaMont said. “The more women who advocate for maternal wellness benefits, the better.”

At Milk N Mamas Baby, LaMont and her women-lead team are advocating for mamas and babies every day, one mother at a time.
