5 Ways to Save on Your Summer Vacation

Summer is in full swing, but have you been delaying a summer vacation because it all just seems too expensive? It doesn’t have to be that way, and you don’t need to spend lots of cash to create lasting memories. Living on a budget doesn’t equal living a boring legacy. Take time this summer to have fun—just be intentional about it.

Here are five ways to save on your summer vacation:

1. Take a local vacation.

You know all those touristy things in your city that you’ve never done, even though you’ve lived there a few years already? Make a list and create a hometown vacation! Whether you decide to visit the aquarium, science museum, water park, or zoo, remember to ask about military discounts. Also keep an eye out for “special” days, like family day.

2. Visit national parks.

Did you know that military members are eligible for a free yearly pass to all U.S. national parks? My husband and I toured the Rocky Mountain National Park during our honeymoon, and a couple months later, we visited the Grand Canyon—with the same free pass. When pulling up to the park entrance, tell them you are military, and they will give you a free yearly pass right there!

3. Tour Blue Star Museums.

This is another free opportunity for military families and also a chance to sneak in some summer education for your kids. There are more than 2,000 museums across the United States that have partnered with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and the Department of Defense to offer free admission to those who serve and their families. This program operates through Labor Day each year.

4. Fly Space-A.

If you are willing to be flexible, Space Available is a great option for military families wanting to fly during vacation. Visit the Air Mobility Command website to obtain more details, or check out our post on navigating Space A here. If you don’t have the luxury of flexibility, ask for the military discount when traveling with commercial airlines. These can usually only be obtained when making reservations over the phone, not online. American Airlines offers free checked baggage to military members and dependents as well.

5. Go camping.

This can be done while out of town on vacation, on a day trip, or even in your backyard! It certainly is less expensive than staying in a hotel, and it helps with family team-building skills. If you want a camp-like experience but don’t like the idea of sleeping on the ground, many Kampgrounds of America locations offer cabins. Make sure to ask for the military discount! Visit KOA here to find amenities in your area of choice.

What has been your favorite family vacation ever?

Good post, Mal! Love the pinnable graphic for sure! It looks very good on social media. We did this – local attractions- this year and have really loved having our “staycation” be at home this summer.
