Scrolling through Facebook, I am flooded with pictures of families smiling, kids playing, and other new moms with captions reading, “heart full.” I must stop scrolling because I can feel the tears coming down my face again. I had a baby 5 weeks ago, and I should be more like the photos I see of smiling faces. But most days, it takes all the strength I have to get out of my room. The dark side of having a baby that I was not prepared for was Postpartum Depression as a military spouse; especially when your service member is away.

Your kids have a slew of friends and they don’t have to PCS, but they also don’t have friends that understand why their parent is gone. Your family loves you, but they too do not comprehend the feeling of a spouse being away.

Consistency is essential in building safe boundaries yet still showing love and care to a child.
Consistency can also help a child feel safe because they’ll always know someone is there to love them and take care of their essential needs as a human. Consistency in the military is almost an oxymoron. As the sun rises every day, I know that my service member’s plans with the military have changed in some aspect. There’s a running joke between military spouses when someone asks how long our service members will be gone, when we’re moving, or where we’re moving, and the answer is usually, “I don’t know.”
