Recon Rendezvous: A Little Milspouse Fun

Welcome to AWN’s Monthly Recon Rendezvous! We’re so glad you’re here. As the name implies, Recon Rendezvous is a place of community and connection. It’s an opportunity to explore and learn about our fellow military supporters’ lives, victories, trials, and experiences.

Each month, we “rendezvous” here to provide information, resources, and encouragement. Thanks for contributing to the interactive empowerment of military spouses around the globe!

It’s no secret that I’m a rather outgoing gal. I’m an extrovert to the core and energized by being with people. I’m not afraid to try new things and tackle a new adventure, which probably makes being a milspouse a solid fit for me.

So, with this personality set up, one might think that “having fun” comes naturally. Surely I’m the life of the party and always looking to add fun to my everyday, right?

Yeah, not so much. See, I’m also uber responsible and as a military spouse, parent of two tiny humans, volunteer with AWN, and doctoral student, my responsible side often wins out over the fun.

But fun is important to keep our batteries charged and to stay motivated. I’ve learned this the hard way, so one of my goals (I call them God-sized dreams) for 2018 is to experience 100 intentionally fun moments.

Yay! Sounds great! But, um… now what?

I quickly realized that attempting to conquer the mountains of laundry (seriously, where does it all come from?) and working behind this computer screen don’t necessarily count as fun. So, I turned to one of the greatest resources I’ve ever encountered: you.

That’s right. We asked our Army Wife Network followers what they do for fun. The ideas were really creative, economical, simple, and attainable. I added several ideas to my own list and hope that you add a few fun-loving thoughts to your adventure arsenal as well.

Check out their responses to the question: “What do you do for fun?”:

“I like to sew, embroider, play with the kiddos, and go to musicals in Raleigh.” — Jennifer W.

“For fun, wine is a given, but I also go to Pinterest and have a crazy pinning spree! It quenches my urge to buy stuff I don’t need and focus my energy on being creative.” — Ashley W.

“As a nursing student I pretty much study anatomy and dissect for fun. The rest of the time I’m working my butt off to become a nurse.” — Bethany L.

“We love hiking the Pacific Northwest! There are so many trails we want to conquer.” — Eve D.

A simple girls night with some delicious food is my favorite.” — Leah B.

“We enjoy feeding the fish and turtles in our pond and watching the cattle next to us.” — Patsy R.

“For fun I craft, read, paint, do mixed martial arts, hike, explore, attend church group, volunteer our time & enjoy my beautiful family.” — Amber B.

“We are all about dance parties and karaoke with the cousins!” — Sarah F.

Spending time outdoors with the family is the most fun for us, specifically fishing, hiking, and exploring new places.” — Erica G.

“I crochet! I can do it anywhere and it doesn’t take a whole lot of materials. Baby teethers are my current craze.” —Jennifer W.

“I like to read books for fun, which only happens in between parenting my crazy kiddos. I also like to color, bake at night, clean, scroll Facebook, or play with my babes.” — Hailey T.

“Tuesday we have a military spouse social and we meet up at different coffee shops to get coffee and talk.  I also listen to a lot of music to dance and sing to all the time.” — Amber K.P.

So readers, do you see any of your fun-loving things on this list? The remainder of the great ideas are coming next month, but we would love to hear what you do for fun. Chime in by leaving a comment below.

She is currently in pursuit of her EdD in Educational Counseling with an emphasis in Pastoral Counseling, also from Liberty University. Sharita is not only an Army Wife, but is also a Tiny Human mama of two kiddos, a 6-year-old girl and a 2.5-year old boy. She is also a smallish-dog-owner, aspiring-runner, writer, speaker, and spiritual leadership coach. The Knobloch family believes that it is a great privilege to watch God work as they minister in their Army community, regardless of zip code or time zone. She has been serving with AWN in some capacity since February 2014 when she published her first blog for AWN, and has recently transitioned into the role of AWN Owner & Commander. Sharita gets way too excited about office supplies and journal shopping. She is a certified auctioneer, wore duct tape to senior prom (for a scholarship contest #DontJudge), loves napping, fitness, reading for fun, and cheering others on as they strive to reach their goals. Sharita overuses #Hashtags on a regular basis with #NoShame and frequently uses #America! as a verb.
