Supporting Gold Star Families

I’ve been teaching classes on the military installation lately, and I’m often amazed by how little the military population knows about Gold Star Families. I believe one of the first steps to be supportive of them is to understand the terminology. The second way is to lend your time and or talents to the cause.

Many people are not aware that there is a need for support. Many also do not know how they can help. I’ve listed some resources that are available and always in need of help.

Who are Gold Star Families?

Gold Star Families are any family members that lost their service member while the service member was serving on active duty. This can include being killed in action, suicide, an accident, and any other death.

What is Survivor Outreach Services?

Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) is an Army program that provides long-term support for Gold Star Families. This includes resources, benefit coordination, and financial counseling. SOS also coordinates events and support group meetings for the families. Most Army installations have a Survivor Outreach Services office that coordinates and assists families.

What organizations support Gold Star Families?

There are many organizations that offer support. Here are just a few:

How can you help Gold Star Families?

One way to help is by volunteering at your local SOS office. There are often community events or events held for the families that always need extra help. A wonderful example of the Army community helping Gold Star Families was last year. On Gold Star Spouses Day, a few talented local photographers volunteered their time and talent to hold a photo shoot for Gold Star Families. This was an amazing experience for many of the spouses, because many had not taken family pictures since the loss of their service member. Having the military community take time out of their lives to support events is heart-warming to the families and is particularly special for Gold Star children.

Another way to support the Gold Star Families is to attend community events. There are yearly walks and marathons at various installations. Some have boots with pictures of the fallen that serve as a reminder of those that have made the ultimate sacrifice. To be a family member and to see the military community come out to events to support and remember their loved one is an emotionally wonderful thing.

Army Wife Network is blessed with many military spouses who share their journey through writing in our Experience blog category. As we PCS in our military journey, bloggers too sometimes move on. Their content and contributions are still valued and resourceful. Those posts are reassigned under "Retired Bloggers" in order to allow them to remain available as content for our AWN fans.
