Home Fire Prevention Week: It Can Happen to Anyone
In a matter of minutes, a home fire can engulf the building, destroying belongings, precious mementos of times gone by, and a family’s sense of normal and peace of mind.
At the American Red Cross, the most frequent disaster we respond to—doing so every single day—are home fires. The statistics are staggering.

We’re currently stationed on Okinawa, a place pretty well known for ghost stories. I never paid it much mind, except for when our cats are staring at things that aren’t there and chasing invisible apparitions into the “ghost closet,” as we lovingly call it. But, spooky October is here and has brought with it some ghosts of duty stations past.

One day last spring, morning coffee in-hand, I noticed my dog’s curiosity about an object in my backyard. Hmm… A bit too curious perhaps, so I went outside to see what he found. To my delight he had his nose deep in a bird’s nest. There were no broken shells nearby, so I guessed it had long been abandoned and fallen during heavy winds the night before. I held it in my hand and marveled at it.

Read moreToo Much Toxicity
For quite some time, I’ve noticed some disturbing trends across social media. It seems as if toxicity and the people who spread it have been in full force like a wildfire. It’s not just about what we do but also who we are. I am _____________. Insert your titles. Are you kind? Aggressive? Loving? Generous? Bold? Impatient?

During your first PCS, you’re so overwhelmed from learning move.mil and jumping through all the hoops that you’re just trying to survive the chaos. You’ve also packed, loaded the car, and headed to the new house you worked hard to find and budget for. Your first thoughts driving across the country probably aren’t about renters insurance, but military families need renters insurance.

Read moreConsistency in the Inconsistent: Helping Military Children with Special Needs
Consistency is essential in building safe boundaries yet still showing love and care to a child.
Consistency can also help a child feel safe because they’ll always know someone is there to love them and take care of their essential needs as a human. Consistency in the military is almost an oxymoron. As the sun rises every day, I know that my service member’s plans with the military have changed in some aspect. There’s a running joke between military spouses when someone asks how long our service members will be gone, when we’re moving, or where we’re moving, and the answer is usually, “I don’t know.”
