Lessons Learned in the Army Reserve

I joined the Army Reserve nearly four years ago, and I’m grateful for all the lessons learned and experiences that being a Reservist has brought me. I definitely would not be the person that I am today had I not made the decision to join right out of high school.

Here are a few lessons I’ve learned along the way:

Lessons Learned
One of my favorite quotes that pushes me to always keep learning no matter what is going on in my life.

Lesson One: Exercise is Good

I actually enjoy working out. Before I joined the Army Reserve, I loathed working out, but I’d really never stepped foot in the gym before, let alone ran two miles. In my life. I’d feel like my lungs were going to explode after a mile. After putting in lots of hard work and continually pushing myself through workouts, I no longer dread them. Instead, I look forward to them because I have something to work toward: passing the ACFT, when the time comes for us to take it.

Lessons Learned
Another quote that I’m reminded of from time to time because it relates well to my civilian and Army Reserve lifestyle.

Lesson Two: Be Flexible

I learned to be flexible with my schedule and quickly adjust to new plans if my Reserve unit asks me to come into work or attend a class last minute. Learning to be flexible with my life plans has helped adapt to unexpected changes. Before joining the Army, I would worry too much if what I planned wasn’t going as I expected. Now, I don’t worry if plans go off course; instead, I adapt my plans and just go with the flow.

Lesson Three: Have a Support System

I’ve learned that, with my Reserve unit, I have a secondary support system that has become like family. We may only see each other once a month or so, but I know that, if I need any help, someone in my unit is always more than willing to lend a hand. We are like family and can always pick up our conversations wherever we left off. I’m grateful for all the help and advice my fellow Reservists have given me over the years.

I’ve learned a lot while being in the Army Reserve these past four years, but these are the top three things that have stuck with me. I’m forever grateful for what I’ve learned so far and know that I will learn much for as long as I’m in the military.

Army Wife Network is blessed with many military spouses who share their journey through writing in our Experience blog category. As we PCS in our military journey, bloggers too sometimes move on. Their content and contributions are still valued and resourceful. Those posts are reassigned under "Retired Bloggers" in order to allow them to remain available as content for our AWN fans.
